​Andropogon gerardii ‘Rain Dance’, commonly known as Big Bluestem, is a robust, warm-season perennial grass celebrated for its striking foliage and upright form. Emerging in spring with deep green leaves tipped in red, the foliage transitions to a rich maroon hue as autumn approaches. In late summer, ‘Rain Dance’ produces upright, red flower spike clusters, adding further visual interest. Mature plants typically reach a height of 4 to 6 feet (120 to 180 cm) and spread about 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm). This cultivar thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, exhibiting notable drought tolerance once established. Hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, ‘Rain Dance’ is deer-resistant and provides seeds that attract native songbirds. Its striking coloration and adaptability make it an excellent choice for mass plantings, borders, and naturalized areas.
