Description
Schizostylis coccinea (Mixed Colours), also known as Kaffir Lily or Crimson Flag, is a clump-forming perennial native to southern Africa. It produces slender, upright stems adorned with cup-shaped flowers in a variety of shades, including soft pinks, watermelon hues, scarlet reds, and pure whites. These blooms appear from late summer into autumn, typically from September through November, and can extend into winter in milder climates. The plant reaches a height of 24 to 30 inches (60 to 75 cm) and spreads approximately 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm). Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 9, Schizostylis coccinea thrives in full sun to light shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and benefits from consistent moisture during the growing season. In colder regions, mulching in winter can provide additional protection. This cultivar is also known for its resistance to deer and rabbits, making it a suitable choice for gardens where these animals are prevalent. Additionally, it attracts pollinators like hummingbirds, adding dynamic life to the garden.
