Description

Phytolacca americana (American pokeweed) is a robust, herbaceous perennial native to eastern North America. It typically reaches heights of 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3 meters), with a spread of 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters). The plant features stout, reddish-purple stems and large, alternate leaves that can emit an unpleasant aroma when crushed. From July to September, it produces elongated clusters of small greenish-white flowers, which are followed by dark purple berries that mature in late summer to fall. These berries are a food source for various bird species. Hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, American pokeweed thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of short periods of drought and can become weedy due to its aggressive self-seeding nature. While it has ornamental features, such as showy stems and fruits, it is generally considered a weed in most settings. All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and should be handled with care.
