Description

Liatris spicata, commonly known as dense blazing star or gayfeather, is a herbaceous perennial celebrated for its tall, slender spikes of vibrant purple, tufted flower heads that bloom from mid to late summer. These distinctive flowers open from the top down along the spike, creating a unique blooming pattern. The plant’s narrow, grass-like green leaves form a basal clump, with smaller leaves ascending the sturdy, upright stems. Mature plants typically reach a height of 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm) and spread about 1 to 1.5 feet (30 to 45 cm). Liatris spicata thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil conditions, including clay. Hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, this species is drought-tolerant once established and attracts pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Its striking vertical form and long-lasting blooms make it an excellent choice for perennial borders, native plant gardens, and prairie-style landscapes. Additionally, the flowers are suitable for use in both fresh and dried arrangements.

Sold well-rooted in a tall 9cm pot.
