Description

The ‘Monterey Jack’ daylily, known scientifically as Hemerocallis ‘Monterrey Jack’, is admired for its vibrant and attractive flowers. This daylily variety features large, creamy yellow blooms measuring about 5.5 to 6 inches across, adorned with raspberry-red eye zones and green throats. The petals display lovely piecrust, ruffled edging, enhancing their visual appeal.

This daylily blooms in early summer and is known for its ability to attract butterflies and other pollinators, adding life and color to gardens. It grows to a height of 20-24 inches with a spread of 18-24 inches, making it suitable for a variety of garden settings, including borders and flower beds.

In terms of care, ‘Monterey Jack’ daylilies prefer full sun to light shade and thrive in well-drained soil. They are tolerant of different soil types, including poor and fertile qualities, and can handle a range of soil pH from acidic to alkaline. These plants are also drought-tolerant once established and have a moderate growth rate.

For optimal health and flowering, it’s recommended to plant them in areas that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, and they should be watered regularly during the first growing season to help them establish. They are generally low maintenance but benefit from regular deadheading to keep them looking tidy and to encourage additional blooms.

‘Monterey Jack’ daylilies are also noted for their resistance to rabbits and their adaptability to various garden styles, from patio containers to mass plantings. They can also be divided every 3-4 years to maintain vigor and spread in the garden.
