Description

Artemisia abrotanum, commonly known as southernwood or colloquially as the “cola plant,” is a perennial sub-shrub appreciated for its aromatic, finely divided, gray-green foliage. The leaves emit a distinctive fragrance reminiscent of cola, contributing to its popular nickname. Mature plants typically form a bushy mound reaching 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm) in height. In late summer, they may produce small, nodding, dull yellow flower heads, though flowering is infrequent and often considered inconspicuous. Southernwood thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, demonstrating notable drought tolerance once established. Historically, its fragrant leaves have been utilized as an air freshener and insect repellent, particularly against moths. The foliage also has a long history of culinary use, where it is sometimes added to liqueurs, marinades, and herbal teas to impart a subtle, slightly bitter flavor. Hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, this plant is also deer-resistant and can be propagated through cuttings or division.

Sold well-rooted in a tall 9cm pot.
